Nashville Barrel Company · Barrel strength
Barrel strength and cask strength are the same idea: the whiskey goes into the bottle at the proof it left the barrel. No water is added to bring it down to a standard 80 or 90.
On an NBC bottle, cask strength means no proofing water was added before bottling, and the whiskey is non-chill filtered. The FAQ states the releases typically land between 115 and 145 proof, depending on the barrel. That is a range, not a promise that every bottle sits at the same number.
A few proofs the site publishes, so you can see the spread:
A 50/50 blend of 9-year Kelvin bourbon and 7-year Kentucky rye, bottled at 122.60 proof. It is a blend, and it is still cask strength.
The original 8-year barrels are listed in the 126–130 proof band.
The 20- and 21-year Tennessee bourbon series includes hazmat releases above 140 proof.
The $35 flight is poured from those barrels, not from a proofed-down well whiskey. That is the practical reason a first tasting can feel hotter than a typical bar pour. A few drops of water in the glass is normal. It is also why a single barrel you select will not taste like the last single barrel of the same age: proof, warehouse position, and wood are part of the difference.
If you want that pour while you are in Nashville, book or walk in for the flight. Downtown: the Church Street room, 11am–7pm Monday–Thursday, 11am–8pm Friday–Saturday, 11am–5pm Sunday. HQ on Fesslers Lane opens earlier and has free parking. Links, maps, and the booked tastings are in the visit block under this article, and on tours.
It is not a health claim, and it is not “stronger so it is better.” It is a bottling choice. It is also not the same decision as buying a barrel. Tasting barrel-strength whiskey is the $35 flight or one of the booked experiences. Owning a barrel is the private selection program, which bottles that barrel at cask strength and puts your label on it.
More of the portfolio is on the FAQ and spirits. 21 and over.
Walk-in flights are $35 at the bar. Guided tastings are booked in Xola so the time is held. A private barrel is an inquiry, not a ticket.

Yes. Water in the glass can open the nose. Once water is added in the bottle at the distillery, the proof cannot be raised again.
